Earth Hour: what's all the fuss about?

Earth Hour calls us to switch off our lights for an hour, not just to enjoy a candle*-lit dinner or to go stargazing. Earth Hour actually calls us to remind ourselves in what ways we could possibly reduce energy consumption in our daily lives, to protect our resources and the environment. Switching off the lights and other devices when not needed is one idea. Here are some more:

  1. Riding the bike to work instead of driving, or just thinking of the driving style and how one could reduce the fuel consumption.
  2. Using the stairs instead of the elevator.
  3. Line-drying clothing instead of using the dryer machine.

Except for what not to do ideas, here are some to-do ideas that could help us lessen our carbon footprint:

  1. Eating (more) veggies, as meat and dairy need more resources to be produced.
  2. Planting a garden -as little or as big as one can handle- and making it water-efficient by choosing climate-appropriate plants (We love our Mediterranean dry garden in front of our store).
  3. Buying better- buying less: choosing products that really have something to offer you and actually last. Products that are made from sustainable companies (like us :)), that use recycled and recyclable, or even better, compostable materials (like we do), that use little energy themselves (like we do by producing everything by hand- just our hand mixer and our refrigerator are the tough guys in here), that use little or no water, and that ideally create zero waste during their production (yes, you've guessed right: like we do!)

*Candle tips: choose natural wax (eg. soy) candles over paraffin ones! Choose those without synthetic fragrance! Do not leave unattended!

Earth Hour is on the 30th of March 20:30-21:30 (your local time)
